Our Firm
Elm Engineering, Inc was founded over three years ago. It was the first company in the Charlotte area to focus solely on sustainable engineering and commissioning. We are committed to the AIA 2030 Challenge to be carbon neutral by the year 2030. Every project we do contains elements of sustainability.
Elm’s project list includes over 25 LEED projects either completed or underway. All of our building designs are at least 10 to 15 percent below the required minimums for energy consumption. Most of our buildings achieve even greater energy savings. Our projects save thousands of tons of CO2 emissions every year.
Elm's designs of rainwater collection systems for irrigation, HVAC, and non-potable water use, low flow water closets and faucets, and waterless urinals save 1.8 millions of gallons each year.
We recently renovated our office, using energy efficient lighting, daylighting, low VOC paints, reused and recycled furniture, recycled carpet. We train our staff to recycle and compost at home, carpool, bike, and perform educational outreach with strong volunteerism. Most staff produce one bag of garbage or less per week. We share green tips with each other and with our customers.

At Elm Engineering, we believe commissioning should be involved in every stage of the delivering of a quality facility. Commissioning helps guarantee quality of construction from programming and schematic design through the long term operation of the facility. Elm Engineering is a certified Commissioning Provider and uses the ASHRAE commissioning guidelines. As a prerequisite for LEED certification, commissioning has become an integral part of our sustainable design process.
Our staff identifies actual and potential problem areas and implements solutions to ensure maximum effectiveness. They also direct and monitor production of engineering documentation, including quality control, system efficiency and project cost considerations. The staff interacts with all contractors as well as the owner and design engineers to assure compliance with plans, specifications and standards.
