Davidson College

Duke Dormitory

Davidson, NC

Elm performed LEED commissioning, LEED consulting, and MEP design for this project.

Duke Dorm was the inaugural project at Davidson College in their commitment to sustainable construction. Elm coordinated the engineering and architectural efforts to incorporate LEED requirements. Significant challenges were presented by the age of the original facility and existing low floor to floor heights. Elm integrated all of these challenges into sustainable design for the project.

Some of the sustainable features of the Duke Dorm project are:

  • Bicycle storage racks
  • Recycled content materials
  • Selected plants and established existing native trees require no irrigation
  • Water efficient fixtures for 20% water use reduction
  • Provisions for recycling by the occupants
  • 75% of the existing structure was reused
  • 75% of the construction waste recycled
  • Individual control of lighting and temperature
  • Energy efficient lighting & HVAC systems
  • Low VOC materials
